Dumfries woman raises £1200 for equipment for disabled children

A MUM whose son has a rare disability has raised £1,200 for specialist school equipment.
Tammy Geddes, 31, of Lochside, Dumfries, walked the Great Glen Way from Fort William to Inverness to gather funds through donations.
Her son Jackson, nine, was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome – a condition that delays development.
He attends The Learning Centre at Lochside Primary, and Tammy has raised the money to allow them to buy touch-screen monitors as disabled children find the technology easier.
She said: “I walked from the west of Scotland to the east through the Highlands, gathering blisters and taking allergic reactions to cleg bites – but telling myself the whole way that the kids go through far more challenges every day in life.”
She added: “The monitors make such a difference to the children and give them more opportunities to learn.
“I couldn't have done the walk without Karen Ward, my friend and colleague, who walked with me. My sister and my boyfriend helped care for Jackson while I was away, friends trained with me and Claire Lawson Kirk provided me with loads of advice and suitable exercises that allowed me to do the walk after I had damaged my knee.”
When Jackson was born, Tammy was told her son would most likely not live beyond his fifth birthday. Tammy started fundraising for the monitors after being told the school did not have the equipment.
Once the cash has been collected, she will be turning her attention to fundraising for a new computer.
She will be holding a charity night at The Club on Lochside Road on August 26. Anyone wanting to donate to her cause can ask for further details in Lloyds TSB in Dumfries and quote the “Think With Your Heart Support For Learning Centre Appeal”.
Tammy had been training with Bannatynes Health Club prior to her trip.
