Youth Matters a success

A YOUTH summit geared towards disabled people in Dumfries and Galloway has been hailed a success.
Youth Matters was held in DG One on Friday and saw disabled young people from across the region attend along with local and national decision-makers.
Robert Allan, DG Voice’s policy officer, said: “The conference aimed to provide a voice for young disabled people in Dumfries and Galloway.
“The event was very well supported by opinion-formers and policy-makers from Dumfries and Galloway and across Scotland and the UK.”
He added: “The work done at this conference will inform policy and decisions in Dumfries and Galloway for some time to come. DG Voice know they have helped young disabled people have a voice. What is more, everyone had fun and enjoyed their day.”
Present on the day were representatives from the council, NHS, the police, the fire service and a wide spectrum of charities and organisations representing children and young people.
Over the next few weeks, DG Voice will be preparing a report on the conference, setting out what the young people said about their lives, their aspirations, their needs and what it means to live in Dumfries and Galloway as a disabled young person.
Mr Allan added: “This report will feed into various initiatives, including the council’s youth strategy and youth democracy strategy.”
