New Joint Health and Wellbeing Unit endorsed
NHS Dumfries and Galloway and Council officers have been working together on proposals for a Joint Health and Wellbeing Unit for the region.
These proposals have now been endorsed by the NHS Board on Monday 4th April and by the Council's Corporate Policy Committee on Tuesday 5 April. The Unit will bring together activities currently done by the two organisations to provide more economic, efficient and effective services.
Derek Cox, Director of Public Health, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, said, "This Unit will be the first of its kind in Scotland. In this respect we are leading the way and I am certain that others will follow in the future. It has been far-sighted of our Council to pursue this actively and this reinforces the fact that health is everybody's business."
Richard Grieveson, Head of Resource Planning and Community Services at the Council, said, "The development of this joint Unit is a model of good practice. I hope we can continue to work in partnership so successfully. The Unit will support our Council's priorities and bring expertise in our two organisations together, avoiding duplication and making us more efficient and effective."
The Unit will address both Council and NHS priorities for Dumfries and Galloway, especially those that have already been agreed jointly by the Strategic Partnership:-
- Parenting in early years
- Childhood obesity
- Mental health and wellbeing and
- Improving the health and wellbeing of people involved with the criminal justice system
The budget will also support some of the actions in the Single Outcome Agreement. The Unit will bring together staff in both organisations already working in public health.
NHS Dumfries and Galloway and our Council have provided £1,279,341 to support the unit. Additional funding of £769,105 from a variety of programmes will enhance the Unit's activities and services.
There will be a formal launch of the Unit later in the spring.
